Hotel Monaco Washington DC, a Kimpton Hotel makes its home in Washington’s General Post Office and Tariff Building, a national historic landmark commissioned by President Andrew Jackson in 1839 and designed by Robert Mills, architect of the Washington Monument, and Thomas Walter, architect of the Capitol dome. In 2002, the Kimpton Hotel & Restaurant Group completed a two-year, $32 million restoration that secured the national treasure for future generations. Inspired by Rome’s Temple of Jupiter, the F Street facade’s classical steps, pillars, and pediment belie the colorful decor, casual comfort, and cutting-edge technology within.
Groups meet in the Paris Ballroom, an elegant domed space once used as a library; the Athens Room, overlooking the courtyard; and the Tokyo Boardroom, a 16-person venue suitable for C-level summits. Natural light and high ceilings set an inviting ambience for any agenda. Adjacent to the carriageway portal, in the former mail-sorting room, Poste Moderne Brasserie creates fresh farm-to-table American cuisine for private occasions as well as its popular restaurant and in-room menus.
The accommodations combine the original 20-foot ceilings with vibrant colors, patterns, and all the comforts of a four-diamond hotel. Special touches range from in-room spa services and a companion goldfish on request to a hosted wine hour in the lobby and a 24-hour fitness center. Guests venturing off-site especially appreciate the location—in the Penn Quarter, steps from the National Portrait Gallery, International Spy Museum, Verizon Center, and National Mall.
